With more than 40 professors and over 200 research assistants, the Institute of Physics <\/strong>is the largest institute in our faculty. Research at the Institute of Nuclear Physics<\/strong> aims to explore the basic building blocks of matter and, using innovative precision measurements\u2014particularly via the university’s own electron accelerator\u2014to search for \u201cnew physics\u201d beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button><\/div>\n\n\n\n

With its specialization in Meteorology, the Institute for Atmospheric Physics <\/strong>is the third physics institute at JGU. Meteorological research at the faculty deals with the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere and, based on this knowledge, enables us to understand the serious changes in our climate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Institute of Computer Science<\/strong> is interdisciplinary and has close ties to various institutes, with a focus on methods from mathematics and the natural sciences as well as applications in these areas. The Ada Lovelace Project<\/strong> has set itself the goal of motivating girls and women to study and work in STEM subjects. The project is named after Ada, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852), who wrote the first programs for operating calculating machines more than 150 years ago \u2013 at a time when women were forbidden from accessing universities, academies, and libraries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, more than 53% of all those who finish school with a university entrance qualification and over 50% of new students at German universities are women. Nevertheless, only a small number of women choose STEM subjects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ada Lovelace Project relies on role models: female students in STEM programs inform, advise, and support female pupils. They go to schools, organize project days at universities, and present themselves as examples to small groups of interested female pupils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Elke G\u00f6bel and Dr. Rainer G\u00f6bel have been closely associated with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as alumni for many years and support numerous university projects and institutions. Our faculty views maintaining the connection between the alumni, JGU, and the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science as an important task. Part of this are the traditional farewell to the graduates as part of the annual graduation ceremonies as well as numerous activities organized by the three alumni associations founded on the basis of the subjects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association Freunde der Informatik e. V.<\/strong> (“Friends of Computer Science”) was founded in 2013 with the aim of promoting computer science at JGU in academia, research, learning, and teaching. The activities range from organizing summer festivals to workshops on various current computer science topics to events such as internship exchanges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

The sponsoring association Freunde der Mathematik e. V.<\/strong> (“Friends of Mathematics”) was founded in 1998 with the aim of making studying at JGU more attractive and inspiring students to pursue a degree in mathematics. In addition, the association has a forum for former students who want to maintain contact with the institute and with former fellow students. It is also a contact point for students who are planning to study abroad and for students who are guests at the institute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

The alumni association Gemeinschaft der Physik e. V.<\/strong> (“Community of Physics e. V.”) was founded in 2017 by a group of physics students at JGU with the aim of bringing current students into contact with former students who have already arrived in a professional field. It also offers students support in shaping their individual professional careers. Alumni from the local economy are regular guests, showing the professional fields in which physicists can work. Seminars and workshops on professional orientation complement the association’s offer. Lectures by scientists from JGU offer insights into current research in the working groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabs><\/div><\/div>\n<\/jgu-base-section>

Faculty 08 \u2013 Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science \u2013 consists of a total of five institutes. In addition to the institutes of mathematics and computer science, the three institutes for physics, nuclear physics, and atmospheric physics together form JGU's physics focus. The university's own Mainzer Mikrotron (MAMI)<\/a> accelerator provides an electron beam with outstanding beam quality for experiments in nuclear and high-energy physics on the fundamental structure of matter, and for innovative precision measurements. In order to be able to conduct precision tests of the Standard Model in the low-energy range in the future, the innovative MESA (Mainz Energy-recovering Superconducting Accelerator)<\/a> accelerator is currently being developed and constructed on the university campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) was successful in the Excellence Strategy competition organized by the German federal and state governments with proposals in which the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science played a key role. Most recently, the PRISMA+ (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter)<\/a> research network, which is primarily based in physics, was awarded the status of a Cluster of Excellence. This creates ideal conditions for cutting-edge research, combined with excellent student education and the promotion of young scientists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core research areas at JGU, which are funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate research initiative, also bring together internationally established working groups that have already achieved outstanding results. This has given them a realistic chance of successfully participating in the second phase of the competition as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. Faculty 08 is home to two of these core research areas: the TopDyn \u2013 Dynamics and Topology research center<\/a> and the <\/sup>Mainz Institute of Multiscale Modeling (M3ODEL)<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science owes its great successes and high acclaim to its diversity in research, but also to the effects of profitable interdisciplinary collaborations and a broad range of courses with attractive interdisciplinary facets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Ada Lovelace Project<\/strong> has set itself the goal of motivating girls and women to study and work in STEM subjects. The project is named after Ada, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852), who wrote the first programs for operating calculating machines more than 150 years ago \u2013 at a time when women were forbidden from accessing universities, academies, and libraries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, more than 53% of all those who finish school with a university entrance qualification and over 50% of new students at German universities are women. Nevertheless, only a small number of women choose STEM subjects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ada Lovelace Project relies on role models: female students in STEM programs inform, advise, and support female pupils. They go to schools, organize project days at universities, and present themselves as examples to small groups of interested female pupils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our faculty views maintaining the connection between the alumni, JGU, and the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science as an important task. Part of this are the traditional farewell to the graduates as part of the annual graduation ceremonies as well as numerous activities organized by the three alumni associations founded on the basis of the subjects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gutenberg Network<\/strong> offers all former students and employees the opportunity to register free of charge and join the group \"FB 08 - Physik, Mathematik und Informatik\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The association Freunde der Informatik e. V.<\/strong> (\"Friends of Computer Science\") was founded in 2013 with the aim of promoting computer science at JGU in academia, research, learning, and teaching. The activities range from organizing summer festivals to workshops on various current computer science topics to events such as internship exchanges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The sponsoring association Freunde der Mathematik e. V.<\/strong> (\"Friends of Mathematics\") was founded in 1998 with the aim of making studying at JGU more attractive and inspiring students to pursue a degree in mathematics. In addition, the association has a forum for former students who want to maintain contact with the institute and with former fellow students. It is also a contact point for students who are planning to study abroad and for students who are guests at the institute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The alumni association Gemeinschaft der Physik e. V.<\/strong> (\"Community of Physics e. V.\") was founded in 2017 by a group of physics students at JGU with the aim of bringing current students into contact with former students who have already arrived in a professional field. It also offers students support in shaping their individual professional careers. Alumni from the local economy are regular guests, showing the professional fields in which physicists can work. Seminars and workshops on professional orientation complement the association's offer.
