Our faculty is home to five fields of study, which together offer more than 20 degree programs. In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degree programs with a sole focus on science, we also offer a complete teacher education program (Bachelor\/Master of Education) in the subjects of physics, mathematics, and computer science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the close proximity of subjects and institutes at our faculty, interdisciplinary study programs have emerged alongside the classical subjects. For example, the Institute of Mathematics offers the master’s degree program “Computational Sciences<\/a>“, the Institute of Computer Science houses the master’s degree programs “Computer Science and Natural Sciences<\/a>” and “Applied Bioinformatics<\/a>“, and the Institute of Physics also offers the bachelor’s degree program “Applied Physics<\/a>” with a focus on Computer Science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Computer Science is the science of processing and utilizing information with the help of computers and digital systems. It focuses on how data can be represented, stored, transmitted, and evaluated. Thus, computer science is an important foundation of our modern world <\/strong>and a central concept in almost all sciences: bioinformatics explores the genetic program of living organisms, physics seeks a deeper understanding of the universe as an expression of information-theoretic laws, and the social sciences interpret the internet as the new nervous system of a global society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JGU's Institute of Computer Science<\/strong> was established in close cooperation with the natural sciences. Its historically strong connection to mathematics and the natural sciences offers interested students significantly deeper methodological insights than many conventional degree programs: state-of-the-art methods from computer science have always been necessary for finding new events in the data of colliding elementary particles at CERN or to detect patterns for diseases in DNA sequences. JGU and its physics institutes is a leading representative in research at CERN, and the JGU campus is home to the Institute for Molecular Biology, one of Germany's most significant biological research institutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One research focus<\/strong>, in line with the institute's interdisciplinary focus, is on data science as a combination of big data and machine learning. In addition, there are many other exciting research areas such as high performance computing, visual computing, bioinformatics, and information systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Mathematics is the foundation of all natural and engineering sciences. It helps describe and solve problems from the most diverse areas, and enables complex situations to be abstracted, simplified, and illustrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Institute of Mathematics<\/strong> offers a wide range of courses from all fields of mathematics: from abstract topics in number theory and algebraic geometry to analytical and stochastic modeling, and numerical applications in computed tomography and hydrodynamics. A special feature of the institute is the scientific-historical perspective of the \"History of Mathematics and Natural Sciences\" work group, which offers courses on the historical development of mathematics. Mathematicians at Mainz University are also involved in numerous international research collaborations, such as in the interdisciplinary core research area \"Mainz Institute of Multiscale Modeling\" (M\u00b3ODEL)<\/strong>, where collaboration in the field of materials research takes place across subject boundaries with representatives from the natural sciences and computer science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Processes in the atmosphere have been fundamental to all life on Earth since time immemorial. Hurricane-like storms and torrential rainfall, the melting of Arctic sea ice, drought disasters, and air pollution are just some of the current topics that meteorologists deal with. Meteorological knowledge of how the Earth's atmosphere works is essential for understanding how weather and weather phenomena arise. Furthermore, the diverse interactions of trace gases that vegetation and the Earth's surface exchange with the atmosphere are of interest for climate research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Institute for Physics of the Atmosphere<\/strong> (as Meteorology is called from a physical perspective) deals with the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere to understand the severe changes in our climate. Our researchers approach complex and interesting, fascinatingly beautiful, but sometimes also dangerous natural phenomena through the interplay of theoretical models and experimental methods. We use cutting-edge technology, whether in the form of high-performance computers, observation satellites, or innovative, self-developed measuring instruments. The institute even has its own vertical wind tunnel<\/strong>, where suspended cloud and precipitation particles can be investigated under near-atmospheric conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their program of study, meteorologists acquire a broad natural science and interdisciplinary basis to contribute to solving essential problems in the field of weather and climate. The curriculum conveys the necessary mathematical-physical foundations as well as specialized knowledge in theoretical and experimental meteorology. However, the systematic methods learned can be applied far beyond meteorological content: Meteorologists are generalists who are employed wherever such skills are needed \u2013 ranging from the energy sector and the insurance industry to finance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Physics is arguably the most basic of all natural sciences, dedicated to exploring the fundamental laws of our universe. From the largest dimensions of the cosmos to the smallest elementary particles \u2013 physics strives to understand the world in its deepest essence. As a driving force behind countless technological innovations that shape our daily lives, physics is both intellectually challenging and deeply enriching. It deals with energy, matter, space, time, and the elementary forces, which are described through observation, experiments, and mathematical modeling, be it in classical mechanics or modern quantum mechanics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Institute of Physics<\/strong> at JGU is characterized by a broad teaching profile and a high-caliber research program. Its focus areas are in the fields of theory and experiment concerning particle physics, condensed matter, and quantum physics. The research at the Institute of Nuclear Physics<\/strong> aims to explore the fundamental building blocks of matter and to search for \"new physics\" beyond the Standard Model of particle physics through innovative precision measurements \u2013 especially at the university's own electron accelerator. JGU is also the location of the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+<\/strong> (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter), a joint research initiative of both institutes and the Helmholtz Institute, which is also located on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students directly benefit from this research excellence by participating in experiments at large accelerators such as the LHC at CERN<\/strong> or by getting involved in unique local facilities like the Mainz Microtron MAMI<\/strong> and the future MESA accelerator<\/strong>. This direct involvement in cutting-edge research and the use of state-of-the-art infrastructure, combined with international networking, decisively shape the physics program in Mainz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

How can weather phenomena be predicted? How does climate change affect the Earth's system as a whole? How do we deal with the impact of climate and environmental change, and what are the solutions? These are the questions addressed in the subject of environmental sciences, which at JGU strongly focuses on the natural science foundations of weather and climate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center are the physical processes that make life on Earth possible in the first place. Environmental sciences at the Institute for Physics of the Atmosphere<\/strong> form an intersection with meteorology, particularly in the area of mathematical-physical foundations, but their focus is more on application-oriented content than on theoretical depth. Students gain early experience in practical projects and learn how to handle modern measuring instruments. Computer-aided analyses and statistical evaluations are integral parts of the program of study from the outset, and, last but not least, competence in scientifically sound communication is also part of the program and teaches students how to convey complex issues in an understandable way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The environmental sciences are increasing in relevance in light of the growing challenges in the context of climate change and its impacts on the Earth's system. Students are taught how to analyze complex problems and develop strategies and measures to address environmental issues, such as promoting a sustainable use of resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
