Are you considering staying in academia after you finish studying and dedicating yourself to your own research project? If so, a doctorate might be the right decision for you.

Regardless of which subject you choose, you should know in advance which options you have for pursuing a doctorate at JGU:

If you would like to obtain a doctorate at JGU, you must register as a doctoral candidate via JOGU-StINe.

If you would also like to enroll as a doctoral student in addition to registering, please indicate this in your registration application. You can also enroll later. Consider whether enrollment makes sense for you or not.

Benefits of enrolling:

Detailed information on registration and enrollment, as well as step-by-step instructions, can be found here.

The traditional option: You complete your doctorate independently and individually and are supervised by a doctoral supervisor.

You complete your doctorate as part of a comprehensive structure at a graduate school or a graduate center, i.e., at an institutionalized university body.

JGU offers certain grants and continuing education measures for doctoral candidates at JGU.

In addition, the structured doctorate at a graduate school or graduate center is an option.

You can also obtain a binational doctorate through joint supervision at JGU and at another higher education institution outside Germany. You will then receive a doctoral degree awarded jointly by both universities.

Here is a breakdown for how to complete your doctorate. The individual steps will differ depending on the type of degree you previously obtained.

Hey, my name is Daniela Fetzer, and I am completing my doctorate in Physics. Since 2023, I have been working in the group of Prof. Dr. Michael Wurm on the construction of a new experiment in the Center for Fundamental Physics here in Mainz.

As David’s successor in the DoV, I am only joining for the last half year of the current period. Nonetheless, I am happy to now be a part of the PhD representatives and will try my best to actively contribute to the tasks at hand.

My name is Xenia Heilmann and I have been working on my doctorate at the Institute of Computer Science since October 2022. I am working on methods and ideas on how to make artificial intelligence, more specifically machine learning algorithms, fairer and more private.

I am happy to be part of the current DoV and hope to promote and strengthen networking, exchange, and communication between doctoral candidates – both with each other in the faculty and across faculties.
